Scaling up

By scaling up non-profit projects, resources can be used more effectively and efficiently, the project quality improved and their capacities increased.

Non-profit organisations are most successful when they implement their projects efficiently. All too often however, precious time and resources are used to develop new and innovative projects. There are many pilot projects – yet few choose to copy these good approaches.

By scaling up successful non-profit projects, it is possible to

  • use resources more effectively and efficiently
  • improve the quality of projects and
  • increase their social impact

In order to promote the scaling up of tried and tested projects and thereby exponentiate the resulting positive effects, the Association of German Foundations together with the Bertelsmann Foundation realize the project "Effektn", which researches methods used for scaling up projects successfully. The aim of the project is the facilitation of scaling up by publishing guidelines, developing indicators to identify projects which can be transferred as well as presenting examples of successfully scaled up projects.

The project follows the "Social Franchise" project, which the Association of German Foundations carried out jointly with the following foundations:

What does scaling up mean?

The scaling up of projects can be defined as the passing on and use of concepts that have already been developed and tested. By adapting them to local peculiarities, they can be developed further and optimised.

Scaling up does not necessarily mean the identical replication of a project from one location to another: adjustments to the local context are key to the success of a project. If a project is to reach out to more people, however, it makes sense to pass on and disseminate a project concept, fundamental working processes, as well as project results. Whether the whole project is to be scaled up – or indeed only certain aspects – depends on the starting situation and aim of the project.
